Elizabeth Davis Chestnut

April 07, 1925 - March 15, 2022

Elizabeth (Betty) Davis Chestnut, age 96, passed away on March 15, 2022, in Denver, Colorado, where she had lived the last few years near her daughter. She was born in Woodstown, New Jersey, April 7, 1925, to the late Hilda Richman Davis and Frank Davis Jr. She was a 1943 graduate of Woodstown High School.

She was predeceased by her husband James L. Chestnut after 56 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by her brother Elwood Davis and her sister Anne Pfeffer.

She is survived by her brother Frank Davis III of Alloway and her daughters Midge Minot (Ed) of Palmerston North, New Zealand, and Laurie Chestnut (Michael Klahr) of Denver. Four grandchildren are Ethan Minot of Corvallis, Oregon, Hannah Burrell of Wellington, New Zealand, Marc Rowe of Denver, Colorado, and David Rowe of Seattle, Washington. She is also survived by seven great grandchildren.

Betty was a lifelong active member of Woodstown Friends Meeting where she taught First Day School for many years. As an avid Girl Scout leader, she loved teaching her girls how to set up camp and cook on an open fire. Betty and Jim loved to travel taking their girls on many camping trips across the country.

In later years Jim and Betty divided their time between Florida and New Jersey. They became international travelers with trips to England, Scotland, Australia and New Zealand often to visit Midge and her family. Betty made her last trip to New Zealand at 86 for her granddaughter Hannah’s wedding. She moved to Woodstown after Jim died and was active as a volunteer tutor for young people and in the shop at the Friends Village. She later moved to Friends Village and enjoyed 4 years there before moving to Denver.  

A memorial service will be held on May 15 at 4:00 pm at the Woodstown Friends Meeting House, 104 N. Main St., Woodstown, NJ.
