"Charles Frank Zavala, first son of Sidney & Helen. Raised in Silverlake, Los Angeles Frankie's outgoing friendly personality was nourished by the energy of the exciting times. He volunteered at the recreation center keeping watch on his brother Tom and saved money he earned plucking chickens. He attended St Francis of Assisi and Cathedral High School where he participated in dances, track and as a cheer leader. In USC's School of Dentistry, he mastered brewing, socializing and water sports while achieving his aspirations to become a dentist."
"In his second marriage to Sue Thompson he helped with raising her children Michael and Kelly in the Woodland Hills house. The ranch had shrunk to a donkey and a goat, but his home was open to entertain all. His home was his venue for his souvenirs from his many travels, and the telling the many stories and jokes he had collected.
He enjoyed teaching his children and others to swim, to sail, to ski, to be active. A member of the West San Fernando Valley Power Squadron he honed his skills and taught others seamanship. As Troop 503's Scout Master for several years, he nearly always participated in monthly camp outs. He taught prosthetics at USC's dental school for several years. His Mexico beach house became a landmark to many and a source of many drunken stories of tequila and pisco sours. His lively eclectic passion for music from Irish to Latin, calypso to jazz, Spike Jones to steel drums mirrored his diverse genealogy, from the founding families of Los Angeles, from Basque Spain, from Ireland - Frank's roots were deep."
