"Irene Lozano our beloved, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and aunt, moved to her heavenly home on July 21, 2022. Irene was born on October 25, 1949, in Riverside, where she lived all her life.
Irene attended North High School in Riverside. She started working at UCR in the early 1970s and was recruited to be the first Student Affairs Officer for the UCR/UCLA Biomedical Sciences Program. She continued to oversee Biomed Student Affairs through the growth of the program until her retirement, guiding undergraduates as well as the medical students. She was a strong advocate for students and volunteered many years of service as an advisor to student led organizations including Latinos in Science and Chicanos for Community Medicine. She was also an active member of Chicano Education Cultural Fund which raised funds to award student scholarships. In 2004, she helped launch a new pre-medical pathway program the Medical Scholars Program, which was made possible only because she happily returned to UCR from an early retirement. This program remains active today as one of the most successful pre-medical pathway programs at UC Riverside. Irene was close to many of the medical students who would often return to visit her."
