Alfred Dale Ratledge, "Al," lived a life that spanned over a century witnessing the transformation of a nation. Born on a farm in Oklahoma, the last of 9 children, he endured some of the most challenging times in American history, including the Dust Bowl & the Great Depression of the 1930s, 2 world Pandemics, and witnessed the evolution of cars, telephones, airlines and computers.
In Missouri, he met and fell in love with Hazel Bachtel, who would become his wife on February 14, 1943. They raised a loving family of four children: Dianne Ridgley, Ed Ratledge, Deb Day, and Jan Carpenter. Al was also blessed with two grandchildren, Ed Ratledge and Brian Ratledge, and two great-grandchildren, Will Ratledge and Addie Ratledge.
During World War II, Sergeant Al's job as an airplane electrical mechanic, was to “keep the planes in the air,” as he put it. His wartime experiences in India were marked both by extraordinary sights and tales. However, on his return home, he said that the bottom of the Golden Gate Bridge was one of the most beautiful sights he’d ever seen.
Al shared his love of fishing and the beauty of nature by taking his family camping and hiking in our beautiful National Parks every summer.
His career took him through various roles, from carpentry to aircraft mechanics working for TWA. In retirement, he and Hazel traveled the country in their RV before settling in Eugene, OR where their shared passion for square dancing brought joy to their lives.
Al was a man of immense kindness, intelligence, and boundless love. He touched the lives of everyone he met leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
In accordance with Al's wishes, no memorial or services will be held. Instead, for those who wish to honor his memory , contributions can be made to K9s For Warriors at https://k9sforwarriors.org This organization reflects Al’s readiness to help those around him.
May he rest in peace, knowing he was cherished by all who knew him.
