Sandra Churns Fair, 83, of Evergreen, CO, passed away November 27, 2023 from complications of heart failure, surrounded by her 3 loving children, in Fort Collins. She was born May 1, 1940 in Greensburg, PA to the late Harold W and Florence Churns. Sandy was the oldest of 5 siblings and often cared for them. She graduated as an RN from the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh. She met the love of her life, Charles Fair II and they settled in Butler PA and had 3 children, Kelly Bartsch (Robin Dolan) of Wheat Ridge CO, Julie Fair (Steve Hill) of Fort Collins, CO, and Charles Fair III of Fort Collins. They moved to Evergreen, Colorado in 1980 to take advantage of the economic upturn, but the skiing wasn’t bad either!
Charles and Sandra fell in love with skiing in Austria in the seventies. They enjoyed traveling together and had many great adventures whether it be car trips with their kids, camping in the US, cruising, and traveling to Mexico, Hawaii, and parts of South America. Sandy and Charlie were avid skiers and took their family on ski trips to New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado, with the famous to us, Bozo Army, a group of 5-6 families. They traveled to the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean every summer with their children.
Sandra enjoyed her nursing career and worked at the Butler Memorial Hospital while raising her kids. She had a passion for pediatric nursing, working for Evergreen Pediatrics. She then worked for National Jewish, with asthmatic children with trauma and behavioral issues. She was most proud of this work in her career. She finished her nursing career with Colorado Allergy and Asthma Centers at age 70.
Sandy loved her friends, was well loved, and had fun everywhere she went. She enjoyed dancing, live music, Evergreen Rodeo, and the Rodeo Parade. She was an athlete and enjoyed running and hiking. For Sandy’s last year of life, she lived with her daughter, in Fort Collins, who has extensive flower gardens. She said “I’ve never lived anywhere like this!” She spent hours and hours wandering through deadheading, raking, and enjoying the flowers and wildlife. She loved her church in Evergreen and served as a Liturgist for many years.
She lost her husband, Charles, in 1997, and her first grandchild, Joachim Daniel, in 2019. She is survived by her 3 children; 3 grandchildren, Hannah, Zachary, and Adam; 2 great grandchildren, Gavin and Astrid; and her 4 siblings Dick, Jim, Kathie, and Debbie; and numerous nieces and nephews. Despite all her losses, she was resilient and lived by the motto “Carpe Diem!” She will be missed by all who knew her. She will be remembered for her beauty inside and out, her smile, her kindness, and her love of life.
Memorial donations can be made to dementiatogether.org or Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA.org).
A Celebration of Life will be held for Sandy on Saturday, Dec 16, at 1 pm, at her beloved United Methodist Church of Evergreen.
