Catherine “Katie” Muriel Nowak Becker was born in Los Angeles, California to Anna Louise Davis Nowak and Theodore Andrew William Nowak Jr. on February 7, 1931. She passed away with loving family by her side in her home January 31, 2024.
She grew up in Los Angeles where she attended and graduated from Los Angeles High School and then attended UCLA for a short time. She later worked at The Telephone Company and then worked for many years at LAUSD as office manager at Commonwealth Elementary School until she retired in 1996.
Walter “Walt” Carl Becker was born in Lincoln, Nebraska to Martha May Creamer Becker and John Joseph Becker on December 16, 1929. Walter passed away on June 10, 2007 at Kaiser Medical Center in Los Angeles with loving family members at his side. He was the youngest of 7 children and the last surviving of his siblings. As a teenager, he moved to San Diego, CA with his parents, where he attended and graduated high school. He later worked in the California Forestry Service, and while working in Fallbrook, he met Katie. Walt served in the US Army during the Koren War. He was honorably discharged.
Katie and Walt courted until they were married on June 2, 1956. They resided in Los Angeles where they raised their 4 kids, Bill, Mike, Kathy and Tom.
Walt worked for Hughes Aircraft and later as a Regional Manager at World Book. He continued his career in auto sales, eventually owning a Minute Man Press Printing Company, where he retired.
Katie and Walt met in De Luz by Fallbrook, CA at Larry Butlers Ranch. Walt was in the California Forestry working on a fire line. Katie was visiting the Butler's with her family. While taking a break, Walt met Mike, Katie's younger brother, and inquired about Katie. Then they met...the rest is history.
Katie and Walt were married on June 2, 1956 in an intimate ceremony at the Presbyterian Church on 6th Street and Norton in Los Angeles. Their reception was held in the Nowak’s back yard at 937 3rd Ave. They were married for over 51 years. They were in love until the end.
Katie and Walt enjoyed their family and friends. They loved to go on family trips to Bend, Oregon, Sequoia, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Washington, DC, Sedona, The Grand Canyon, and more. Their love and devotion to their grand kids and great-grand kid was their passion and joy which kept them going.
