Robert B Hubbard, Bob to family and friends, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 2, 2026, following a brief illness. His daughter, Beth, was by his side.  He was 91.

Bob was born on March 3, 1935, in Pittsburgh, PA, to George and Janet Hubbard.  He was a graduate of The Hill School in Pottstown, PA (1953) and The Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University (1959), where he was a member of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity.  He married the love of his life, Elizabeth M Stiles, in 1962.

Bob was a licensed professional engineer in NY, PA and IN, and had a distinguished 38-year career with the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa). He retired in 1997 as Vice President, Operations-Alcoa Electronic Packaging, Inc. in San Diego, CA. His technical engineering achievements were recognized with numerous awards during his career, including the Arthur Vining Davis Award for Technical Excellence.

Bob was happiest when he was on the water. He was a lifetime member of the United States Power Squadron (USPS) and a longtime member of the San Diego Sail and Power Squadron (SDSPS), where he served as both Commander and Executive Officer.  He was widely known for the poignant invocations he delivered at SDSPS events, meetings and dinners.  He received the Senior Member Award for Meritorious Service to USPS and SDSPS in recognition of his countless contributions over the years.  Bob was also an active member of the San Diego Cruiser Association, San Diego Observer Association, and the San Diego Maritime Museum.  He served as a National Park Service volunteer at San Diego’s Cabrillo National Monument, was a USCG Certified Vessel Examiner, and was a founding member of the Lake St. Lawrence Yacht Club in Massena, NY.

Bob loved travel and adventures whether sailing the British Virgin Islands, camping in a Bermuda cave, exploring Costa Rica, or driving through New England while eating his fill of seafood.  

Bob and his wife loved animals and rescued many of them throughout their lifetime.  During the last few months of his life, Bob enjoyed weekly visits from volunteers and therapy dogs affiliated with Love on a Leash. 

Bob is loved and survived by his children, Elizabeth G Hubbard and Robert B Hubbard; granddaughters, Auden and Fraya Hubbard; sisters-in-law, Nancy Degnan and Antoinette Hubbard; cousin, Iris Ann Fraser; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 43 years, Liz; parents, George and Janet Hubbard; sister, Nancy Benton; and brother, David Hubbard.

A private service will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Newburyport, MA, where he will be interred alongside his wife, Liz, and other members of the Hubbard family.
